PRIME BURGER

Headed to Prime Burger tonight with my vegetarian friend Lucid (seriously). The style and manner of this restaurant appear so welcoming, I wish I'd known of it when I lived on E 54th.
After 74 years in business, they will shut their doors Sunday.

Keep you posted.

QUEENS MUSEUM

NOTE: Take a deep breath....
You know when you find something you really like online and at the exhaustion of your computer you keep the tab open all week because you can't shut down your computer because that will close the tab and the inspiration from the story or photo or video or whatever will close along with it?
Right. Same here.
So, Monday, that happened to me with the below image, captured in Williamsburg, BK, in 1959, by Frank Oscar Larson. The Queens Museum is showing this image and 59 others from Feb 5th - May something-th. Go check it out.

Post Script:I'm closing the tab and restarting my comp. DOK, sounds like a bike ride and a good excuse to hit Flushing for lunch!

EATALY

Eataly is the kinda place I instantly and blindly hate on. Fuck Eataly, I have Rafetto's, Pino's and Joe's Dairy no more than 3 blocks from my fire escape.

Monday afternoon, Tori and I walked up 5th Ave to Batali's Disneyland and I was very pleasantly surprised. The space is large and the layout is open with 5 or so main sections - Butchers, Seafood (w/ a crada bar), Desserts, Produce, walls of Olive Oil, etc. I found the typography to be easy to navigate and the feel very clean with white tiles, hints of marble and just enough bright light. Condiments, sweets & beautiful cans of everything Italian color the space between the main areas. It's a good looking place.

While walking through the little pathways I stumbled upon the WALL of Olive Oil and was immediately asked if I needed any help or was interested in a tasting. Duhhh, um, yea... The sommelier of oil let us taste 2 diff oils and talked with us about some others until we were sorted with a much improved bottle for about the same price I'd been paying for the Colavita "crap" (he literally called it crap which was a bit much, but he'd earned a pass).

I was surprised to find much of the pricing appealing. Sure, you can buy 40 dollar lb of mushrooms, a glass of 15 dollar vino and a can of sardines for 100 clams, but you can also scoop a special bunch of carrots, a couple hands full of dark purple potatoes or some perfectly caliente green chilli peppers for less than a subway swipe. Furthermore, why hate on matchless, Italian imports priced for people who can afford such things? Eataly is on 23rd st, 25 years removed from Jim Carroll & Chris Mack's 23rd st. of wandering methadoners.

So, next time you're in the hood, stop by for a snack or a quick once over - they did a wonderful job with the place.

Post Script: I'm goin' back for those sardines!

4:30AM - iLLLY Pakistani cab driver is BUGGGGin'! I watch his driving for a few mins to make sure he's not drunk. He won't stop laughing, singing and calling me 'The Man'... Whoa. tooooo early or tooooo late for this. Still, enjoy his wackiness.
6:00AM - Flight takes off, on time, for Chicago. Insert earplugs, zzzzzzzzzzzz's.
7:22AM (Central) - The landing @ O'Hare wakes me, deplane, wash face, grab coffee & catch a cab to Grant Park in downtown Chicago.

Babbo

Let me begin by thanking Tra for the treat, thanking the recession for hooking the rese and PRE-PAUSING the following!
DISCLAIMER: I do not judge spots by the price of their dishes, the effort of the rese or the star power involved. If Lugers', steak for 2, was 15 dollars, it would still BODY every spot in NYC in the dark with its chubby arms tied behind it's back. We ALL know a lot of the best Vietnamese spots are VERY inexpensive... WORD.
So, 11 years after opening, Babbo is still THAT SPOT that helped to make Batali a singular name chef... Upon sitting down, a Chic Pea Bruschetta was served - imagine Red Pepper flakes, INSANE Olive Oil and some ?tangy something a top a Baguette slice, simple, solid & to the point - VINO PLEASE! Grabbed a clean crisp white, sommelier suggested, from some ill region I didn't have time to write down... BACK TO THE VITTLES! The 2 antipasti dishes we ordered was not as simple as the chic peas - the 1st was 2 Large, grilled, Soft-Shell Crabs on a bed of Scarlet Runner Beans & the 2nd was Octopus that was outrageous! Cooked to a perfectly firm texture w creamy Borlotti beans and a Spicy Limoncello Vinaigrette, the oct blew my mind... For the main course Tra chose the 'Spaghettini' in a Tomato sauce w/ Chives and a ONE POUND LOBSTER for good measure (OH, AND 'NUFF BUTTER)! I chose the whole Branzino, filleted and served w a side of grilled Radicchio wrapped in Pancetta (WOWSERS)... The fish was accompanied by a sweet, tangy jam made from oregano and lemon... The Branzino was PERFECTLY cooked, lightly firm, moist w/ a earthy, grilled skin... And the Radicchio must have been grilled on the same grill as it was smokey and solid... We finished the bottle and decided to skip desert only to receive a final treat with the check: almond biscotti, chocolate baci cookies, and almond meringue cookies...

DAMN.
JOB WELL DONE. PRETTY IMPRESSED THAT THIS MANY YEARS LATER A RESTAURANT STILL CARES AND HOLDS ITSELF TO SUCH A HIGH STANDARD - THANK YOU.
